ELGIN, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield men's tennis team swept Elgin Community College, 9-0, on Tuesday afternoon.
"I was really happy with the way we went to work," said first-year head coach
Tom Rees. "It's nice to put one in the win column, the manner in which we did so is even more pleasing. We have a tough weekend on the road and are looking forward to making some more headway as the season progresses."
The Stars actually played singles competition first due to time constraints with each player winning their match.
Cole Buehnerkemper (Effingham, Ill.) shut out his opponent, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 spot. Doubles partner
Gerard Carpinell (Spain) defeated Parker Featherston, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 1 position. At No. 3 singles, senior
Hayden Esker (Effingham, Ill.) wrapped up his singles match first with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Basit Syed.
Sophomore
Billy Shinn (New Lennox, Ill.) finished third in the singles round and picked up a 6-1, 6-0, win in the No. 6 position. His doubles partner,
Grant Fitzsimmons (Springfield, Ill.) grabbed a 6-0, 6-3, win in the No. 5 spot.
Pradeep Ravisankar (India) wrapped up the singles victories.
Carpinell and Buehnerkemper paired up in the No. 1 doubles spot for an 8-4 win. In the No. 2 spot, Shinn and Fitzsimmons squeaked out an 8-6 win. In his UIS debut,
Sean Courty doubled up with Ravisankar and won 8-4 in the No. 3 position.
UIS is now preparing for a weekend against William Jewell and Northwest Missouri on Sunday in Liberty, Mo.
