ROSEMONT, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield defeated No. 15 Wayne State, 1-0, on Friday evening at the Lewis Dome Invitational. UIS dropped a 5-2 decision to Grand Valley State in the first game of the day.
Against Wayne State, senior
Lauren Hollinshead (Streator, Ill.) hit a single and moved over when
Brittany Miller (Washington, Ill.) was hit by a pitch. Junior
Ashli King (Sterling, Ill.) then sent a double to center field to bring home Hollinshead for what would become the game-winning run.
Sophomore
Taylor Bowlby (St. Charles, Ill.) went the distance, surrendering just five hits and one walk, while striking out two. The Prairie Star defense did not commit and error and only let three players past second base.
For the Warriors, Briana Lee tossed a complete game with six hits, one run and one walk, while striking out 15.
In game one, Grand Valley struck first with three straight runs in the first inning. Ellie Balbach hit a double to bring in the first run before a single and bases-loaded walk made it a three-run inning. With the bases still loaded, pitcher
Alexandria Smith (East Peoria, Ill.) forced a pop out to end the inning.
The Prairie Stars responded in the second inning with two runs of their own. Hollinshead led off with a walk before stealing second. Miller was hit-by-pitch to put two on for senior
Chelsea Minor (Petersburg, Ill.) to hit a triple and bring in the runners home for a 3-2 game.
GVSU tacked two more runs on in the third inning and it was all the Lakers needed as pitcher Sara Andrasik held the Stars to just three hits. For the game, she struck out six and walked four.
Illinois Springfield returns to action on Saturday against Saginaw Valley State at 3:30 p.m. and Upper Iowa at 6 p.m.
