Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Ties Southern Indiana, 1-1

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – 110 minutes wasn't enough to decide this one as the University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team tied the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana, 1-1, Sunday afternoon at Kiwanis Stadium.

The Prairie Stars are now 0-11-3 in GLVC play with one game left in the regular season, Wednesday against McKendree.

Sunday's game was senior day for the Prairie Stars. Three members of the 2014 women's soccer program were recognized in a pregame ceremony. Falyn Lockenour (New Berlin, Ill.), Ashley Surface (Alto Loma, Calif.) and Kim Tokarski (Hobart, Ind.) will play their final game at Kiwanis Stadium on Wednesday against McKendree.

The teams played out a very even first half where neither team could find the back of the net despite quality chances. UIS goalkeeper Paige Polonus (Plainfield, Ill.) finished with six saves in the game including three in the first half.

The visiting Eagles nearly took the lead in the 20th minute of action. USI's Haley Rheinlander received the ball around the six yard line but Polonus was there to stop the ensuing shot. The Prairie Stars responded with a chance of their own just minutes later. Ashley Surface headed a shot that deflected off the crossbar in the 24th minute.
Polonus was called upon again just before halftime to stop Shelby Tarantino's effort as the horn sounded for the end of the half.

It took 22 minutes of play in the second period for the Prairie Stars to find the breakthrough. Falyn Lockenour delivered a corner kick into the box where it bounced around and over the USI keeper to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Prairie Stars kept the visitors off the scoreboard for 15 minutes before USI's Rheinlander received a pass across the box, which she put away to tie the game with just six minutes remaining.

Surface nearly won the game for UIS in the 88th minute, collecting a pass and firing shot from 15 yards out but USI's Courtney Lofland was there for the save.
In the extra periods, Polonus made her fifth and sixth saves to keep the game tied, 1-1. The Prairie Stars created shots but didn't find the net as the game ended in a draw.

The Prairie Stars are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 29 against McKendree.
