The Illinois Springfield baseball and softball programs are excited to announce that Jason Simontacchi, former Major League pitcher and professional coach, will serve as the guest speaker at the 2026 UIS First Pitch Event on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The annual First Pitch Event will take place in the UIS Student Union Ballroom, beginning with a happy hour at 5:30 p.m. and followed by the program at 6:00 p.m. The event celebrates the start of the upcoming baseball and softball seasons and provides fans an opportunity to connect with Prairie Stars student-athletes, coaches, and fellow supporters.
Simontacchi brings a unique and inspiring baseball journey to Springfield. He spent four seasons in Major League Baseball, pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2002–2004 and the Washington Nationals in 2007, finishing his MLB career with a 20-10 record.
His professional career also included time in the minor leagues, independent leagues, the Italian professional league, and representing Italy at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Following his playing career, Simontacchi transitioned into coaching, beginning with the Peoria Chiefs in 2013. He later served as pitching coach for the Springfield Cardinals from 2014-2018, where he earned Texas League Coach of the Year honors. He currently works with the Kansas City Royals organization as an assistant and minor league pitching coordinator.
Simontacchi's experience as both a player and coach will provide valuable insight and inspiration as UIS Baseball and Softball prepare for their 2026 seasons.
The First Pitch Event offers attendees the chance to meet the athletes and coaches, hear about season goals, enjoy food and beverages, and celebrate Prairie Stars athletics in a lively, welcoming atmosphere.
