Prairie Stars Take Ninth at GLVC Championship

The University of Illinois Springfield men's golf team competed in stroke play at the GLVC Men's Golf Championship in Smithville, Mo. on Sunday and Monday. UIS carded scores of 296, 301, and 316 to total 913 in three rounds of stroke play on their way to finishing ninth of twelve teams. 

The Prairie Stars were in fifth place after the first 18 holes. Alex Seibal paced the Prairie Stars in T3 position by shooting 70 in round one. Julien Babineau shot 73 in the first round to grab onto T12 position. Daniel Edwards (76), Jake Baldin, (77) and Brady Wilson (78) ranked T31, T37, and T41, respectively. 

The Stars slipped into T6 as a team with a 301 second round. Alex Seibal and Julien Babineau remained in the top-20, all Prairie Stars stayed in the top-50 in the field of 61 golfers. 

Golfers were met with strong winds on the already tough course in the final round. Every hole averaged over par on the day. 

Alex Seibal gained back two positions over the final round to finish tied for ninth place with a total stroke play score of 219. Julien Babineau (224) and Daniel Edwards (232) were T19 and T37, respectively. Freshman Prairie Star Jake Baldin (240) improved upon his round two score, shooting 81 in the final round to stay put in 48th. Brady Wilson (244) rounded out the scoring and finished T51.

UIS was in the middle of the pack, averaging 3.50 on par 3s, 4.27 on par 4s, and 5.15 on par 5s. The Stars totaled 159 pars and 26 birdies.

The top-four teams: UIndy, Missouri-St. Louis, Missouri S&T, and McKendree will advance to the medal/match play semifinals on Tuesday. 

All-Conference positions Nos. 6-10, as well as GLVC Player, Freshman, and Coach of the Year will be selected by a vote of the league's coaches after the tournament. 

The NCAA Division II Men's Golf Regional selections will be announced via press release on NCAA.com on Friday, April 26. The UIS men's golf team has not earned a regional ranking this spring, but has potential to advance an individual to the NCAA DII Midwest/Central Regional in Edmond, Okla. on May 9-11. Sophomore Alex Seibal currently holds a No. 21 regional ranking.
