LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Four Prairie Stars carded rounds of 76 and under on Monday as the University of Illinois Springfield men's golf team finished in tenth place with a score of 618 at the UMSL Desert Classic.
UIS jumped three spots in the final round from 13th to 10th place. The three-spot improvement tied for the largest in the field of 17. The Prairie Stars second round score of 299 was the third-lowest score of the day.
Redlands claimed the tournament title with a final team score of 590. Redlands' Bobby Holden earned medalist honors with after shooting a 67 on Monday, making him one-under par for the tournament (143).
Sophomores
Talon Supak (Washington, Ill.),
Trevor Flota (Mount Vernon, Ill.) and
Nathan Goecks (Lannon, Wis.) led the way for UIS. Supak tied for 27th place with a score of 153 (77-76). Flota shot the best round of the day for UIS with a one-over par 73. Goecks matched Supak's round of 76 giving him a score of 158.
Senior
Jacob Wherley (Ozark, Mo.) and junior
Kent Gregory (McLeansboro, Ill.) posted two-day scores of 161 (87-74) and 162 (79-83), respectively.
Freshman
Jesse Johnson (Highland, Ill.) competed as an individual for UIS and improved on his first-round score, finishing with a 173 (87-86).
The Prairie Stars are back in action on March 14 & 15 at the UIS Spring Invite in St. Louis.
