Know A Star: Frank Marsaglia, Golf Coach

Spencer Jury and Frank Marsaglia

Frank Marsaglia is the dean of the UIS Athletics Department. He recently completed his 12th year as the head coach of the UIS men's golf team, and his eighth season as the head of the women's golf program. He has led the women's golf team to four NCAA Division II regional appearances, and he has coached two players who qualified as individuals for the NCAA Division II National Championships. Under Marsaglia, the two golf teams have won 24 tournaments, and has defeated over 50 percent of their opponents.

Prior to coaching at UIS, Marsaglia was an assistant golf coach at Virden High School, and also helped with the volleyball and baseball programs. He is the President of Marsaglia Computers, Inc., a position he has held since 1985. The business builds custom computer packages for business, home, and school settings. Marsaglia is a 1983 graduate of Florida Atlantic, where he also played baseball.

Tell us about your background and how you ended up coaching at UIS:
I attended Lincoln Land Community College and played baseball, and then continued my baseball and educational career at Florida Atlantic University. I graduated there with a math-computer degree. Upon graduation my wife and I decided to return to Central Illinois. She became a teacher and I am a computer programmer. I continued building on my computer background and teach in the computer fields today.

I still wanted to be involved in sports and over the next 20 years coached baseball, golf, basketball, and volleyball in high school.  When my kids graduated from high school I looked for other opportunities and UIS was just starting a golf program. They couldn’t find anyone else for the job so I was their only choice at the time. Now 12 years later they probably wish someone else applied (haha).

What do you like best about the sport you coach:
The coaches in the league are great and you get to see some very nice courses and the country.

What has been the top moment/game of your coaching career:
The two times, once for the women and once for the men, when we had someone qualify for the NCAA National Tournament.

What’s the best thing about coaching at UIS:
I like the school size and the other coaches and staff are a great group of people.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not coaching:
Working on projects that include some physical labor (houses, yard, furniture etc.).
