Know A Star: Matt Brock, Men's Basketball Coach

Matt Brock

Matt Brock just completed his first year as the head coach of the UIS men's basketball team. In year one, he led the Prairie Stars to one of their best NCAA seasons. Brock inherited a team that returned just seven players, and suffered two season-ending injuries before the season. Despite the obstacles, Brock led the team to a 14-14 overall record. UIS defeated three nationally-ranked teams during the year, more than its previous 10 NCAA season combined.

Brock hit a milestone late in the season when he won his 100th career game, and he is now 101-54 all-time in five years as a collegiate head coach. His first four seasons were spent at Missouri Baptist, where he went 87-40. His top team came in 2018-19 when the Spartans went 28-5, won a conference title, set a school record for wins, and had its highest national ranking at No. 3. Brock was also an assistant coach at Columbia College, Pittsburg State, and Hannibal-LaGrange. He was a four-year letterwinner in basketball at GLVC rival Truman State.

Tell us about your background and how you ended up coaching at UIS:
I grew up in the gym as a coach’s son. I loved basketball and shot 1500 shots every day. After my playing career was over at Truman State, I coached a year of high school basketball before getting to the college level as an assistant. I was fortunate to work for a lot of good mentors and eventually took over as head coach at Missouri Baptist University. We had great players and assistants that helped build a championship program. That led to the exciting opportunity here at UIS.

What do you like best about the sport you coach:
You can practice by yourself, but basketball is truly a team game. The best teams play together and have synergy. The game requires not only athleticism but a lot of intelligence and skill. Players have to play on both ends.

What has been the top moment/game of your coaching career:
Cutting the nets after our conference title at Missouri Baptist in 2019. Beating Bellarmine back in January is a close second.

What’s the best thing about coaching at UIS:
The people. The student-athletes, athletic administration and staff, the other coaches, the campus community, we have the best people to be around!

What do you enjoy doing when you are not coaching:
I love to spend time with my family outdoors, lately we are into fishing. I also like to run and play golf.
