The UIS baseball team capped off a four-game sweep of Upper Iowa with a 13-2 victory on Sunday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa. The Prairie Stars have now won 12 straight games dating back to March 22 and improve to 21-10 overall and 14-5 in GLVC play. The Peacocks dropped to 14-18 overall and 10-10 in the conference.
Game Recap
- UIS took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on three singles and a hit-by-pitch, exiting the frame with the bases loaded. Starter Adam Lindsey kept UIU off the board through the middle innings, including working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth.
- The Prairie Stars added three runs in the seventh inning following a pitching change. Kody Morton doubled home Mark Kattula, and Johnny Wendling followed with a two-run double that scored Morton and Ivan Dahlberg. Upper Iowa scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout after a fielding error.
- UIS tacked on four more runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, a sacrifice fly by Kattula plated the first run, and Morton added another RBI with a sacrifice fly of his own. Mack Clark delivered an RBI single to score Noah Caceres, and Ty Hollandsworth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another run.
- In the ninth, two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for UIS. With two outs, Mack Clark delivered a grand slam, sealing the 13-2 win in decisive fashion.
- Clark finished with three hits and five RBIs in the win. Morton had two hits, scored twice, and drove in four runs. Ethan Bowers and Mark Kattula also tallied two hits apiece.
- Adam Lindsey got the start and delivered 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Quinn Hoftender earned the win in relief, keeping the Peacocks off balance across 2.1 effective innings. Jake Uber and Kyle Tyler also appeared out of the bullpen to close out the final two frames.
The successful weekend, which came against an Upper Iowa team that also entered the series with 10 GLVC wins, helped UIS solidify its place near the top of the conference standings. The Prairie Stars now sit in second at 14-5, trailing only Lewis, which holds a 14-2 GLVC record. While most of the league continues conference play next weekend, UIS will step outside the GLVC slate before returning for the final stretch of the regular season.
