Prairie Stars Advance with Upset Win over Southern Indiana

OZARK, MO --- Brayden Jensen (7-0) pitched the Prairie Stars (32-20) away from elimination with an eight inning gem, beating Southern Indiana (32-19) by a score of 7-1 at the GLVC Tournament. Jensen stayed perfect on the season, throwing eight innings, surrendering just one run on six hits against the GLVC east winner and top-seeded Screaming Eagles.

Jensen surrendered a run in the top of the first inning but settled in, retiring seven of the next eight batters and not allowing another hit until the top of the fourth. After the hit in the fourth, Jensen retired 14 straight Eagles before two runners reached in the eighth, but got out of the jam, inducing a ground ball to third.

Down 1-0 in the fourth, Myles Hann sparked a UIS rally with a one-out single before Austin Muench singled to put runners on first and second. An error loaded the bases before Zach Patterson put UIS ahead with a two-RBI single to right.

In the seventh, Patterson lead off the inning with a walk and scored on a double from Trey Hannam, who later scored on a home run from Cole Taylor, his 12th of the year, giving UIS a 5-1 lead. Hannam later added to his impressive stat line, blasting the Prairie Stars second two-run home run of the game in the eight, putting UIS up 7-1.

Cameron Zunkel came in to close out the game in the ninth, allowing a hit and a walk but retired the final two batters, getting a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

After being held to four hits against Quincy, UIS exploded for 16 hits against the GLVC's top pitching staff. Hannam led the way, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three RBI, and two runs. Patterson, Michael Rothmund, Hann, Muench, and James Battley each had two hits.

This marks the first post-season win for the Prairie Stars in program history after losing their first five GLVC Tournament games, dating back to 2014.

UIS eliminated Southern Indiana from the GLVC tournament with the win and will now wait to face the loser of Quincy and William Jewell. The Prairie Stars will take the field for another elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 and with a win, would play again at 7:30 pm. All games can be followed on live stats or you can watch on the GLVCSN.
