No. 12 Hawks Fight Past Prairie Stars in GLVC Tournament

QUINCY, IL – Quincy University fought past the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's soccer team in a 3-0 victory during Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) quarterfinal.
 
"We knew going into [Sunday's] match that it was going to be a battle," UIS coach Erin Egolf said. "Besides the goal we gave up in the first half, we were in the entire match. Overall, I'm pleased with the girls' performance."
 
Cassidy Foley, Mo Rooney and Maddie Bauer each led the top-seeded Hawks (16-2) past the eighth-seeded Prairie Stars (9-6-4) with a goal apiece. Quincy is ranked No. 12 in the latest United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II poll.
 
During the fourth minute, Mackenzie Rief fired a one-timer that went high.
 
Foley put Quincy on the board 11 minutes into the match when she capitalized off a pass from Gabby Orlando.
 
During the 21st minute, the Hawks served the ball to Rief, who delivered a header that hit the post. Regina Bolin cleared the ball out and prevented a Quincy rebounding opportunity. One minute later, Foley had a good look, but her shot was saved by UIS goalkeeper Courtney Johnson. The Prairie Stars had their best look of the first half came from Karisa Rogers 38 minutes into the match, who took a shot that went high.
 
UIS came out swinging in the second half. During the 50th minute, Delaney made a drive to the goal, fired a shot from 25 yards out, but the shot went just high. Madisyn Coudriet took a free kick 63 minutes into the match but Rooney recorded a team save against Coudriet's shot.
 
"We were super dangerous in the second half."
 
Needing a goal to tie the match, the Prairie Stars switched to an offensive-friendly formation with 10 minutes remaining.
 
"Down 1-0 with 10 minutes left, we had to go for it. We went to three defenders in the back and threw the numbers forward. Unfortunately, we couldn't find the equalizer."
 
Quincy went ahead 2-0 during the 87th minute. Natalie Quisenberry chipped a free kick to Rooney, who was directly in front of the net. Rooney directed the pass in for a goal.
 
Two minutes later, Foley served a free kick to Bauer, who converted the goal and gave the Hawks a three-score lead.
 
The Hawks advance to the GLVC semifinals, where they will face fourth-seeded Bellarmine University (7-3-6) on Nov. 3 at 12 p.m. (ET) in Indianapolis, IN at Carroll Stadium.
 
Quincy goalkeeper Megan Swanson rejected both of the shots she faced. She currently leads the conference with 12 shutouts and ranks third in the GLVC with an .892 save percentage. Johnson saw six shots and tallied three saves.
 
Quincy outshot UIS by a 23-to-13 margin.
 
The Prairie Stars received shots on goal from Coudriet, Delaney and Maggie Juhlin. Juhlin contributed four shots, Delaney provided three shots, Rogers and Erin Bolskar notched two shots apiece while Coudriet and Kaylan Mills each added a shot.
 
"This has been a fantastic season and I so appreciate that these girls bought in and trusted the process. I'm extremely proud of what this team was able to accomplish this year and it makes me excited for the future as well."
 
SENIORS
Matsen, Bolin, Coudriet, Mills, Sam Morin and Hailey Hawkins closed out their UIS soccer careers.
 
Bolin made 72 career starts for the Prairie Stars. The defender from Kansas City, MO is tied for ninth among UIS Division II career leaders with four career goals.
 
Coudriet started in 71 career matches for the Prairie Stars, Among UIS Division II career leaders, the defender from Chesterton, IN is tied for third in game-winning goals (3), tied for eighth in assists (4), tied for ninth in goals (4) and tied for ninth in points (12).
 
Matsen played in 66 career matches and provided 26 career starts. Among UIS Division II leaders, the midfielder from Springfield, IL ranks fourth in career goals (8), is tied for fifth in career points (18) and is tied for first in career game-winning goals (4).  She is also tied for sixth in single-season goals (4) and tied for 10th in single-season points (8).
 
Mills made 51 career starts for the Prairie Stars. The midfielder from Oswego, IL is tied for fourth in single-season assists (3) among UIS Division II leaders.
 
Morin played in 54 career matches and contributed 31 career starts. Among UIS Division II career leaders, the midfielder from Lake in the Hills, IL is tied for ninth in goals (4) and tied for fourth in game-winning goals (2).
 
Hawkins played in 30 career matches for the Prairie Stars.
 
"As for our six seniors, we are going to miss them greatly. They were wonderful ambassadors for our program and they paved the way for a lot of the success. While this chapter of their lives is closing, I'm positive they will go on and make lasting impacts in whatever they do."
 
UIS DIVISION II RECORD BOOK
Rogers ranks third in career goals (9) and career points (21). Johnson holds second in career shutouts (8), is tied for second in single-season shutouts (4) while shattering the single-season record in goals against average (1.08). Taylor Mraz is tied for fifth in career assists (6) and tied for fourth in single-season assists (3). Delaney is tied for fourth in single-season assists (3) and is tied for fifth in single-season points (11).
 
LOOKING AHEAD
During the 2017 season, the Prairie Stars qualified for their first GLVC Tournament while setting program records for most wins in a season and most conference wins in a season. The Prairie Stars expect to return 19 players and build on their success next season.
 
"For our returners, they should expect this to be the new standard. It was a phenomenal season. Huge applause to the girls for what they did this year. The future is bright for Prairie Star soccer and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of it."
